Playful Literacy | IDENTIFYING LETTER SOUNDS Coloring book (ages 3-5)
The attached coloring book is meant for preschool-aged children between the ages of three to five to learn letter to sound correspondence. In this coloring book, children will start identifying a letter by its name and calling out its sound (letter to sound). As that becomes easier, children will then be able to listen to a letter sound and call out the letter (sound to letter). This is the first step towards reading. Children who are younger can use it to begin learning to color and label the images.
To begin using the coloring book, show your child the first letter, name the letter and call out its sound (e.g., “C says ‘/k/’”). Then, ask your child if they can come up with anything that starts with that sound (word-retrieval exercise). Focus on the sound versus naming of the letters. Then, have your child color in the image!
More resources to come to help you set a strong foundation for early reading and to support your child as they learn to read!
