Curriculum

We believe that a child’s positive experiences after preschool starts with a strong foundation in communication and social skills. Our preschool curriculum uses Playful Learning, a pedagogical tool that combines free and guided play, to foster joyful learning, meaningful connections, and socialization skills. We build enriching language opportunities that foster well-developed communication skills through play-based learning across our core segments of the day: Playful Literacy, STEM, and Drama.

Every week, a new theme centers all of our core segments throughout the school. Lessons are scaffolded by age for each cohort so that more complex language and activities are done as children get older. Examples of themes and letter-sound pairings include “c” is for camping, “g” is for galaxy and “r” is for a restaurant. In the Playful Literacy segments, children sing a song and learn a letter sound by touch. They make letter-sound shapes through a sensory letter (“s” in shaving cream, “r” with rocks, etc). They learn to tell and sequence stories, listen to stories and listen for rhythm and rhyme. These phonemic awareness activities are taught through play and experiential lessons in a way that is fun, natural, and carefree for children to participate in.

Each day, children also participate in STEM and Drama. STEM activities are also paired with our theme of the week. We help children become curious thinkers by asking questions, thinking abstractly, and problem-solving. Children have made clouds, oobleck, volcano explosions, and more!

Finally in Drama, children pretend play with the theme of the week. Here, children gain a lot of background knowledge about the theme and act out roles in the themes to bring it all together. They have done “th” is for theater and made puppet shows, shadow puppets, and magic shows! We have also done “s” is for space and made a NASA space station too! The world is limitless in Drama!

We also conduct a daily sports and dance program! Every day, we do a different sport or dance class— tennis, basketball, soccer, dance, and the jungle gym—with our sports and dance coaches (Coach A, Coach Martyn, and Ms. Erin!) as well as use the playground for recess time.

Children in our full-day program can expect to have both a packed snack and lunch during the program.

Play-Based

Our curriculum is based in play. We believe in guided play opportunities as well as child-led play. Children participate in a combination of structured and unstructured play throughout the day that engages their listening skills, socialization and creativity through developing their imagination.

Thematic

Our curriculum specifies a theme each week that corresponds with a letter sound which we play out in life-sized dramatic scenes in our Drama segment each day. Themes are meant to be both concrete so that children can grasp the concept of theme, but also abstract enough to push their boundaries to be creative, imaginative, and inquisitive as they play with friends to construct and deconstruct concepts learned. Examples of themes include C is for Caterpillars & Butterflies, N is for News, B is for Bones & Galaxies, P is for Picnics, and many more.

Language Enriching

Our curriculum, designed by our language specialists, naturally embeds opportunities for children to learn how to tell stories, communicate with their peers and share their ideas and opinions. By using explicit language, we teach our students options for how to express themselves in a way that allows them to flourish their thoughts independently.

Child-Led

Our program centers its lessons on development. The five areas of development we enrich include language, socialization, behavior, motor and play. By focusing on development, we can tune in on the specific needs of each child and make the curriculum accessible to them as they need.
